Borrowing Information

  • Users must present their library card to check out materials. If a library card is not present, the patron will be asked to present a form of identification. There is a $1.00 charge to replace a lost or damaged library card.
  • There is an overall limit of 10 items at one time on a library card. Summer residents have a limit of 5 items at one time.
  • Library cards must be renewed every year for updated information.
  • All books, audio books, & DVDs are loaned out for 2 weeks.
  • Empire Passes are loaned out for 3 days.
  • Holds can be placed from your own device, our card catalog, or with a staff member at the circulation desk.
  • Materials will be available for 10 days after they are processed.
  • There is a limit of 10 holds per patron. Summer residents have a limit of 5 holds.
  • Items may be renewed once over the phone, in person, or online.

Late fines and fees

To promote equity, the Hawn Memorial Library has eliminated most overdue fines, but library users remain responsible for “billed item” fees. Billed-item fees are charges applied for lost, damaged, or unreturned materials and have not been eliminated. To avoid these fees, library users are encouraged to take care of and return materials in a timely fashion so others may also enjoy our shared resources. 

Empire Passes: $80.00 will be charged to borrower’s account if not returned on time.

Fishing Poles, Tackle Boxes, Fishing Nets, Life Jackets: A $20 deposit is required from the borrower when picked up. The $20 will be given back to patron once returned, if the item is not returned the $20 will remain on patron’s account.

Payments may be made with cash or check at our front desk.

Request Materials:

We welcome requests for materials that are not in our Library collection. We do our best to fulfill requests, however there may be circumstances where materials are unavailable. We also offer the Adopt a Book program so that our patrons can be the first in line to read our newest books. This gives patron’s the chance to help support the library’s collection development.

All that you need to do:

Donate $15.

Pick out a book from the Adopt a Book tree for either adult books or books for children and teens that are available for adoption, or request a book “off-list” that you would like the library to own.*

Contact us to request the book or let us know at the circulation desk.

When the book comes in, you will be the first to read it! The book will also have a commemorative bookplate honoring your donation.

This program has been a very beneficial program for the library and avid readers alike. It gives patrons a chance to jump ahead of the waiting list for high demand books from authors, and it helps the library purchase more books than it otherwise would be able to.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to get involved, use your love of books to make a difference, and see exactly where your donation is going. An adopted book is a gift that can be opened and read, again and again.

Returning Items:

We offer many easy ways to return your materials:

  • Return items to the front desk during library hours, either to a staff member or our drop box inside.
  • Return via the drop box outside, 24/7.
  • Return to any library within the NCLS system.
